Hadsund Marina
Welcome to Hadsund Marina – surrounded by the fjord, idyllic forests, and exceptional experiences.
Embark on an adventure along the waterways of Denmark’s most beautiful fjord – Mariager Fjord. Here, a unique experience awaits the sailor with a taste for a special kind of sailing adventure.
Right where Northern Jutland meets Central Jutland, and where nature unfolds in a sensory harmony of hills, forests, and rolling waters, you’ll find Mariager Fjord – Denmark’s longest and perhaps most beautiful fjord. For recreational sailors, Mariager Fjord is a hidden gem, combining peaceful sailing with rich natural experiences, maritime charm, and small harbor communities full of local soul and hospitality.
Mariager Fjord stretches approximately 35 kilometers inland from the Kattegat and winds like an inland lake through the gentle landscapes of Himmerland. The fjord is both deep and narrow, giving it an almost Norwegian character – depths of up to 30 meters create dramatic underwater terrain, and the wooded hills along the shores reflect beautifully in the calm water. But it’s not just the views that attract; the sailing experience itself is something truly special here.
The entrance to Mariager Fjord lies at Als Odde, where the fjord meets the Kattegat through a shallow delta. Here, the fairway is narrow and winding – about 25 meters wide – and well-marked, but still requires attention, especially during low tide or strong onshore winds. The tide plays a significant role here: water levels can fluctuate by up to 1.4 meters, and especially in the outer parts of the fjord, it’s important to keep a close eye on both charts and depth sounders.
Once you’ve passed the initial stretch and gone through the Hadsund Bridge (opening times available via app or VHF), the fjord opens up and the sailing becomes calmer. Long, peaceful stretches with deep water and nature on both sides await – ideal for both motorboats and sailboats. Mariager Fjord is free of strong currents, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced sailors alike.
Along the fjord lies a string of small and larger harbors that warmly welcome visiting sailors. Each harbor has its own unique charm – with Hadsund, Hobro, and Mariager serving as the fjord’s three main maritime hubs:
In addition, smaller harbors like Høllet, Kongsdal, and Stinesminde offer peace and quiet, beautiful natural surroundings, and great opportunities for a restful overnight stay or a walk in the landscape. Many of these harbors provide access to electricity, water, showers, and nearby nature trails – and they’re located close enough together that you can easily hop from one to the next on a multi-day trip.
There are also several lovely anchorages and mooring buoys – especially in Ørnedalsbugten and along the eastern shores of the fjord. Here, you can sleep at anchor under the open sky, perhaps with the song of a nightingale as your evening serenade.
Although Øster Hurup Harbor is not located directly on Mariager Fjord, it is an important harbor for many sailors – especially those coming from the Kattegat. Here, you’ll find a lively and atmospheric marina with excellent facilities, guest berths, a slipway, and a family-friendly sandy beach right next door. The town center is just a short walk away and offers ice cream stands, vibrant summer life, restaurants, and plenty of opportunities to stock up on supplies.
The harbor buzzes with activity during the high season and often serves as the venue for small events, markets, and live music. It’s a great place to start your journey before heading into Mariager Fjord – or to end your scenic fjord adventure on a high note.
Mariager Fjord is not just a sailing route – it’s a complete experience. From the deck, you can spot deer at the forest edge, watch ospreys gliding over the reeds, and perhaps even be joined by a curious seal in the outer part of the fjord. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to explore local cultural heritage – Mariager Church and Monastery, the Viking Museum at Fyrkat, Bramslev Bakker, and the small towns lining the fjord each tell a unique story about the region.
In several places, guided boat tours with storytelling are available, as well as gastronomic events and opportunities to combine sailing with hiking, vintage railway rides, or museum visits. This makes the fjord ideal for those who want to combine active sailing with cultural immersion and relaxation.
Mariager Fjord is for the sailor seeking presence, nature, and a deeper connection with the landscape they’re moving through. There’s no rush or noise here – just calm, authenticity, and the feeling of gliding through a living landscape where the rhythm of the fjord sets the pace. A sailing holiday here is not just a journey – it’s a pause, an experience, and a story you’ll carry with you.
