The Völva’s World
A magical journey through time and belief – September 27, 2025.
Join us for a magical and illuminating walk through Hobro, and help bring the Viking Age to life. Here, world history comes alive on a local scale in an experience for the whole family — created by locals with pride in our shared world heritage.
The walk culminates at Fyrkat, where the völva’s prophecy, death, and burial unfold in a truly unique way.
In Norse paganism, the völva is both a female cult leader and a recurring mythological figure. She possessed such powerful forces that even Odin, the king of the gods, could seek her guidance and wisdom.
The light walk begins at the Red Warehouse (Det Røde Pakhus) on the harbor in Hobro. The program officially kicks off at 7:00 PM in true Viking fashion. Once everyone has attached a light source to their völva staff (see further details below), we walk together through Hobro and towards Fyrkat. Along the way, we will feel, see, hear, and even taste the Viking Age come alive through mysticism, music, Viking life, and dance.
The route is approximately 4 km long. After the final experience at Fyrkat, there will be a bus available to take participants back to the harbor in Hobro.

What is a Völva?Archaeological excavations at Fyrkat have shown that not only Viking warriors lived at the Fyrkat fortress. At the burial site outside the ring fortress, one grave stands out in particular. A woman was buried in a wagon burial with some very special and unusual grave goods, indicating that the woman was likely a special cult figure from the Norse pagan faith—possibly a so-called völva. Among the unique items were a metal staff and seeds from the poisonous henbane plant. These two objects are closely associated with the völva. The object most surrounded by mystery is the metal staff. It is quite damaged after its time in the ground, so only some metal fittings remain today. But originally, it was the völva’s symbol—a völva staff, or, if you like, a kind of magic wand! |
