Rold Skov is an ideal destination for anyone looking to experience the nature of Himmerland up close. A network of forest roads and paths runs through the woodland, with around 60 km of marked hiking trails offering everything from short walks to longer adventures through the varied landscape.

One of the classic experiences is the walk around Store Økssø. The approximately 3 km trail takes you around the atmospheric forest lake and is one of the popular walks in Rold Skov.

In the southern part of the forest, you can follow Røverruten – the Robbers' Route. This 5.1 km circular trail is one of the "Pearls of Hærvejen" and starts at Stabelpladsen in Arden. Along the way, the route passes places including Kærlighedsstien, Røverstuen, Hestegraven, Hvass Sø and Sortemosehus, combining beautiful scenery with stories of the people who have lived and travelled through the forest over the centuries.

Springs and lakes – the blue gems of Rold Skov

Water is one of the features that makes Rold Skov particularly special. The limestone-rich ground creates an exceptional concentration of abundant natural springs, and the area around Gravlev Ådal is home to some of Northern Europe's most water-rich springs.

Discover places such as Ravnkilde, Lille Blåkilde, Gravlev Kilde and Kovadsbæk, where crystal-clear spring water emerges from the ground and creates distinctive natural habitats. Store Blåkilde is another popular natural attraction in the area.

Several lakes are hidden among the trees, providing peaceful places to stop and enjoy the surroundings. Store Økssø is the best known, while lakes such as Hvass Sø offer tranquillity and a true woodland atmosphere. Together, the springs, streams, river valley and lakes are an essential part of the unique landscape in and around Rold Skov.

Rold Skov is also an excellent destination to explore by bicycle. The Hærvejen cycle route passes through the area, making it possible to combine a forest adventure with a longer cycling holiday through Himmerland and along Denmark's historic Hærvejen route.

For mountain bikers, Rold Skov is one of Denmark's major MTB destinations. The hilly terrain offers around 50 km of trails ranging from forest roads and flowing sections to technical singletrack, steep climbs and challenging descents. There is also a downhill track and an MTB skills area.

The forest also offers excellent opportunities for running and horse riding. Whether you arrive on foot, by bicycle, mountain bike or on horseback, there are plenty of ways to find your own adventure among the trees.

Stabelpladsen and Sortemosehus – a great starting point from Arden

In the southern part of Rold Skov, Stabelpladsen near Arden is an excellent starting point for a day outdoors. Facilities include parking, a natural playground, a campfire site and a dog forest. The area also offers good opportunities for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility to experience the forest.

Close to Stabelpladsen is Sortemosehus, a former forester's house that now serves as a nature centre, activity venue and Hærvejen hostel. It offers the opportunity to stay overnight close to nature and is located directly on both Røverruten and Hærvejen.

Around Arden, you can also combine your forest adventure with a visit to Arden Dyrepark, where families can get close to the fallow deer. Together with the area's natural playgrounds and other family-friendly nature spots, this makes the southern part of Rold Skov an excellent choice for a day out with children.

Rold Skov is full of places waiting to be discovered. Look out for ancient, twisted beech trees, deep sinkholes, quiet forest lakes, bubbling springs, viewpoints, playgrounds and small natural gems that each reveal something about the landscape and history of the forest.

History is never far away. For centuries, Rold Skov has been associated with tales of robbers, poachers and charcoal burners. In the early 19th century, the area became notorious for gangs of robbers who attacked and robbed travellers on the roads through the dense forest. Today, these stories live on through places such as Røverstuen, the Røverruten trail and the many legends that add another dimension to a walk among the trees.

Nature with room for adventure and tranquillity

Rold Skov offers both action-packed experiences and quiet stretches of woodland where you can slow down and simply enjoy nature. Pack a picnic, find a natural playground or campfire site, stay overnight close to the forest or spend an entire day discovering springs, lakes, trails and hidden nature spots.

The forest lies between Skørping and Arden and is easy to reach by car or by train to either of the two towns. Several locations make excellent starting points for exploring the forest, including Store Økssø, Stabelpladsen and Rold Skov Trailcenter near Skørping.
