Right where the forest meets the calm waters of Mariager Fjord, Østerskovturen awaits. This circular walk of approximately 6 km takes you through Hobro Østerskov, along old sunken lanes and beside the fjord. Here, you can find peace among the trees, feel the hills in your legs and enjoy the views across the land between the fjords.
Østerskovturen is certified as a Premium Hiking Trail by Deutsches Wanderinstitut, the German Hiking Institute, and has also been designated a Hærvejsperle. Two good reasons to lace up your walking shoes and explore the countryside close to Hobro.
A Premium Hiking Trail by Mariager Fjord
Premium certification is an international quality label for hiking trails. It helps you choose a route offering varied scenery and rewarding encounters with nature.
On Østerskovturen, the scenery shifts between leafy woodland, small streams, old sunken lanes and open views of Mariager Fjord. Most of the walk follows paths and narrow tracks with natural surfaces, combined with gravel forest roads.
Together with the Panorama Route at Bramslev Bakker, Østerskovturen gives you the opportunity to explore two different Premium Hiking Trails starting in Hobro.
Østerskovturen – a Hærvejsperle
Østerskovturen is also a Hærvejsperle – a “gem along Hærvejen”. Hærvejsperler are certified circular trails near the historic Hærvejen route, allowing you to discover the area’s distinctive scenery on a standalone walk.
The Hærvejen cycle route passes through Hobro, and Østerskovturen is a lovely opportunity to park your bike and continue exploring on foot. You can also enjoy the trail as a day trip or as part of a walking holiday in Himmerland.
From old sunken lanes to fjord views
Along the way, you pass large, gnarled oak trees and tall beeches that offer shelter for much of the walk. Old sunken lanes and small streams add history and atmosphere to the woodland.
One of the highlights is the Duehøj viewpoint, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of Mariager Fjord. The landscape invites you to pause and take in the fjord, the light and the rolling hills.
By the fjord, you will also find a shelter campsite with a fire pit and views of the water. Bring a picnic and take time to enjoy the peaceful setting before continuing among the trees. Several benches and large tree trunks along the route offer places to rest your legs.

Footwear: Good walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain.

Nature and wildlife in Østerskoven
Østerskoven offers something to enjoy throughout the year. In spring, wood anemones bloom beneath the trees. Summer brings a green canopy above the paths, while autumn dresses the woodland in golden colours. When the branches stand bare in winter, new views open up through the forest and towards the fjord.
Listen for the birds as you walk. If you are lucky, you may spot the shy green woodpecker among the trees.
In the western part of the forest, you may encounter grazing cattle that help manage the habitat. Keep a respectful distance from the animals. You can also choose an alternative path around the enclosure.
