A varied hiking route near Hobro

The updated Østerskov Route is an approximately 6 km circular trail through Hobro Østerskov and the surrounding Mariager Fjord area. The route is marked with red arrows and can be walked in both directions. Along the way, you pass through dense woodland, open stretches along the fjord and old sunken lanes filled with history and atmosphere.

The official starting point is at the parking area on Skovvej 26, 9500 Hobro, but you can also start at Hobro Sports Centre on Amerikavej or at Ormeskoven on Kirketoften.

The terrain is hilly in several places, and the route includes forest paths, narrow trails and smaller climbs. Therefore, the trail is best suited for those looking for a moderate hike with rewarding nature experiences. Good hiking shoes are recommended – especially after rain, as some sections may be wet.

One of the highlights of the route is Duehøj, where you will enjoy fantastic views across Mariager Fjord – often referred to as Denmark’s most beautiful fjord. Here, you truly sense the special atmosphere of Himmerland with its silence, soft light and rolling landscapes.

Along the fjord, you will also find a cosy shelter and campfire site overlooking the water. It is the perfect place to take a break, enjoy your packed lunch or simply relax while the gentle waves meet the shoreline.

If you are lucky, you may spot a green woodpecker among the trees or catch sight of deer, pheasants and other woodland animals living in the area. In several places, grazing cattle help keep the forest floor open and create better conditions for flowers, herbs and insects.

The forest changes character throughout the seasons. In spring, wood anemones bloom beneath the beech trees, summer brings green leafy tunnels, autumn colours the forest golden, and winter opens up long views across the fjord.

Along the route, you pass small streams, quiet woodland areas and open views of the fjord, where the changing light constantly transforms the landscape. It is an area that invites you to slow down and experience nature at your own pace.
