Farsø – Himmerland’s town of writers

Farsø is the birthplace of siblings Thit Jensen and Johannes V. Jensen – two prominent figures in Danish literary and cultural history. In very different ways, they left their mark on 20th-century literature and public debate, and their lives and works remain closely connected to Farsø and Himmerland.

Thit Jensen

Thit Jensen is known for her historical novels, including Stygge Krumpen and Valdemar Atterdag. She was also a prominent voice of her time and actively engaged in issues such as women’s rights and voluntary motherhood. Through lectures and educational work, she drew attention to women’s ability to make their own choices regarding pregnancy and sexuality.

Johannes V. Jensen

Johannes V. Jensen wrote myths, stories from Himmerland and novels including The Fall of the King (Kongens Fald) and The Long Journey (Den lange Rejse). In 1944, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him one of Denmark’s most internationally recognised writers.

Discover the story of the two writers

Visit the two writers’ museums in Farsø and discover the story of two very different and colourful siblings. Engaging storytelling and unique collections offer an insight into their childhood in an unusual veterinary family, their turbulent relationship as siblings and their importance to Danish cultural history.

Combine your museum visit with a walk through Farsø and discover some of the places connected to their story. Visit the church and look up at the tower, which was already part of the townscape when Johannes V. Jensen was growing up. Imagine the young Johannes climbing around the church tower with the other boys from the town.

At the cemetery, you can visit the family grave, while south of the town a memorial stone dedicated to Johannes V. Jensen stands on an ancient burial mound – a place he often visited in his youth.

Here, you are in the heart of the Himmerland that left a lasting impression on the lives and works of both writers.
