Ådalens Kulturkøbmand

The general store in Vegger
The general store, beautifully situated where the valleys of the Halkær and Sønderup streams meet in Vegger, has served as the town’s vibrant center since 1905. It is located close to the Hærvej route and the cycling path connecting Aalborg and Hvalpsund.
Since the Stone Age, Vegger has been the place where people crossed the stream. During the time of Harald Bluetooth, it was situated on the main route between Fyrkat and Aggersborg, as evidenced by the runestones in Skivum and at Giver Church.
The Skivum Runestone is the only runestone besides the Jelling Stones that mentions the name “Denmark.”
The Cultural General Store and the surrounding market square (Palmehaven) form the beating heart of the valley and serve as the focal point for a variety of cheerful activities throughout the year.
The store and park offer extended services where cars, e-bikes, and visitors can recharge. Visitors can enjoy refreshments such as coffee, cake, or a hot dog. The park features a new accessible toilet and will also include a pavilion during 2026.
The area’s history, from the Stone Age to the present day, is presented on seven information boards beneath the old ash tree, while Vegger’s history as a flourishing railway town is told through 50 of the town’s historic buildings. Be sure not to miss a walk around the town.
If you are looking for more activity, you are welcome to use the outdoor fitness equipment at the playground by the stadium. If your feet have become warm, you can cool them in either the Halkær Stream (Vegger Harbour) or the Sønderup Stream. The town’s biogas plant, the oldest continuously operating facility of its kind in Denmark, has supplied Vegger with green energy for the past 40 years.
East of Vegger lies Veggergaarde, whose history can be traced back to 1386. If you continue along the cycling path toward Halkær, you will encounter breathtaking views and a remarkable sense of tranquility in one of Denmark’s most beautiful landscapes—much as one of Denmark’s earliest known inhabitants did 10,000 years ago. If you choose the Hærvej route toward Skivum Krat, you will pass close to a remnant of Denmark’s original primeval forest.
In Skivum, hikers and cyclists can find accommodation at the Hærvej hostel in the community hall, as well as a shelter at the nearby activity area. If you follow the cycling path toward Aars, you will reach Blære, where additional accommodation is available in Sløjfeparken near the community hall and school.
